Protection and sustainability: are you ready for the best of both worlds?

At TenCate Protective Fabrics, we’re gearing up to launch a new fabric that will revolutionise the future of protective workwear. While we can’t give away too much just yet, here are some teasers about our new product, and why you’ll want to be the first to know when it launches.

Sustainability

As we know, cotton is one of the most commonly used fibres in the protective clothing industry. However, it is not the most sustainable option. For our new fabric, we have switched out part of the cotton that would normally make up our garments for TENCEL Lyocell, which is made from sustainably sourced woodpulp. We’ve also switched out regular polyester for REPREVE®, a trustworthy and traceable 100% recycled polyester brand which has been proven to stand up to frequent industrial washing and thus improve the overall lifecycle of the fabric. All in all, this means that our new fabric will constitute 50% sustainable fibres. And the great thing is, it will come with Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) data in the form of an EPD®. This EPD® allows you to measure the impact gains per metre of fabric on various indicators like water footprint and Co2 emission.

Protection

Of course, one of our top priorities when it comes to protective workwear will always be wearer safety. We’re pleased to share that our new product will not compromise in this area. Alongside its sustainable qualities, it will be FR-treated, for maximum protection in work environments where heat and flame are risk factors. This means that our new fabric will be leading the way as the first ever FR-treated fabric with 50% green materials. As a result, garment-makers and buyers can have the best of both worlds when it comes to protective workwear that not only does its job to the highest standard, but is eco-friendly and more comfortable than traditional FR-treated fabrics.

Comfort

The advantages don’t stop there. Our new fabric is even more comfortable too, continuing our commitment to the wearer experience. This is thanks to our use of TENCEL Lyocell, which has been proven to provide double the moisture management capacity compared to cotton, the TENCEL Lyocell also brings a softer texture to the fabric, allowing wearers to have a far more pleasant experience on the job.

Delivering on our values

As a leader in FR-fabrics, we have an obligation to be at the forefront of producing them in a sustainable way. This has certainly been a challenge in terms of developing the technology needed to make this a reality, which is why we are extremely excited to have been able to develop this fabric — the first of its kind. In addition, we have always believed that sustainability without added value will not fly — there needs to be added advantages to justify its higher price-point. Not only will our new fabric sit within an affordable price range in the FR-treated portfolio, the added comfort aspect will deliver a superior experience for the end user, benefitting every member of the value chain.
